The Camden Town Group in Context

In November 1910 the critic Roger Fry organised the exhibition Manet and the Post-Impressionists at the Grafton Galleries, London. The first show in England to feature prominently works by Manet, Gauguin, van Gogh and Matisse, it had enormous impact on contemporary understanding of modern art.

Established a year later, the Camden Town Group was inevitably viewed in relation to current debates about realism, naturalism and abstraction. Several Camden Town Group artists wrote reviews for such journals as the New Age or the Art News.
