The boats and figures in the foreground here are rather sketchy, as Turner concentrates on the view beyond, up the River Thames to the north-west from the Pool of London, with Old London Bridge, the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, the tower of St Magnus the Martyr’s Church and the Monument ranged along the skyline.
More than half the drawings in this sketchbook show the River Thames around Old London Bridge, and are likely to date from 1824; see the Introduction.
