A right-hand page from the sketchbook. This quick but informative sketch of Shiplake shows indications of sunset in the sky, confirming that this was an evening stop on the river. As noted by Hill, it is taken from near the junction of the River Loddon, on the left, and the Thames weir. At right is the lock and Cotterell’s paper mill. Turner shows a barge and tender waiting to move up-river while another to the right is passing through the lock. On the hillside, centre, is the church of Sts Peter and Paul.
