This was a right-hand from the sketchbook. If Turner arrived at Henley by river, he must have left his boat for an excursion around the town. As Hill observes, this view is from the Maidenhead road on Remenham Hill, looking down to the bridge (built 1786) and town, with the fourteenth-century Angel or the Bridge inn on the left and tower of St Mary’s Church to the right. Turner shows the coach road in the centre foreground as rutted and worn.
