This is a left-hand page from the sketchbook; the matching right-hand page is D40382. The top-left drawing is a composition study for the painting Walton Bridges possibly exhibited in Turner’s Gallery in 1806 (the Loyd Collection).1 Alongside it on the right is another variant. These develop sketches of Walton Bridges made probably at the same time in Turner’s Hesperides (2) sketchbook (Tate D05845–D05904; D40637; D41506; Turner Bequest XCIV). See also Tate D05927; Turner Bequest XCV 23 for another drawing from the present sketchbook, also used for the picture but looking like another view made on the spot. Hill suggests Maidenhead Bridge for the third subject on the lower portion of the present leaf, on comparison with a watercolour by John Warwick Smith with Agnew’s, London in 1980, and a view (‘Perhaps Kew Bridge’ according to Finberg) in the later (1823–4) River sketchbook (Tate D17788; Turner Bequest CCIV 11).
