Beside ‘Charleville’, Turner has made note of the duchy of which that town is a part, continuing to do so for other towns on Tate D19557–D19558; Turner Bequest CCXVI 3a–4. The ‘Dukedom’ referred to here is that of Rethel (Duché de Rethel, Province du Rethelois). Only two years after Turner executed this sketch, the fourteenth Duchess of Rethel, Louise-Félicité d’Aumont Mazarin, died and the title was claimed by her descendants, the Sovereign Princes of Monaco. The artist’s notes beside Fumay, ‘Bis of Liege’ and ‘Pro ?Cham’, refer to the Bishops of Liège and possibly to the Province of Champagne.
At the lowermost register Turner has drawn a group of figures (these are inverted relative to the foliation).
