Tate Papers no.30 Autumn 2018

This issue features a collection of papers that originated from ‘Positioning Nigerian Modernism’, a conference held at Tate Modern in September 2017. The artist Ben Enwonwu occupies a central place within the stories told here, which also examine the influence of pan-Africanism on the evolution of modern Nigerian art, and the relationship between the ideologies of modernism, colonialism and nationalism. Other articles in this issue include a critical reflection on the frames of practice devised around Tate Exchange during its first year, and an analysis of the role of the object in Mladen Stilinović’s installation Exploitation of the Dead 1984–90.
