The Camden Town Group in Context was first conceived of as a volume of catalogue entries but has developed into a multi-layered electronic resource and repository of new research. During the project’s gestation the Tate team has sought the help and advice of many people, and on behalf of the team I should like to express here our profound gratitude to the project contributors and all those who have generously assisted us.
Particular thanks are owed to Wendy Baron, leading scholar in the field of Camden Town Group studies, who has helped in a multitude of ways, from reading drafts of catalogue entries and essays to providing hard-to-find images. Other editorial advisors have also been unstintingly generous with their time and expertise, and their comments on essays have been invaluable. We are deeply grateful to them all.
Within the project team a great debt is owed to Ysanne Holt, the project’s Academic Advisor and commissioning editor, and Helena Bonett, Research Coordinator, for the dedication they have brought to the realisation of this ambitious and innovative venture. We are deeply grateful to them both for their varied contributions, as we are to Robert Upstone who as a curator wrote many catalogue entries and led the project before he left Tate and to Nicola Moorby who also authored a large number of the project’s core texts about the artists and works in Tate’s collection. Thanks are also due to the interns who assisted on the project, particularly Tom Furness, Kari Rittenbach, Stephanie Forrest and Karen Hickox.
Such a complex project could not have been achieved without the support and professionalism of colleagues in a range of departments at Tate. Particular thanks are owed to the Tate Library and Archive team, particularly Krzysztof Cieszkowski (author of the bibliography) and David Pilling, the Tate Photography team, especially Rod Tidnam, David Lambert, Marcella Leith and David Clarke, and the Curatorial department in Tate Britain. Andrew Tullis in the Legal department has given valuable advice, while Ailsa Roberts in Development and Chris Garner in Finance have supported and helped guide the project throughout its gestation. Special thanks are also owed to Professor Nigel Llewellyn, Head of Research, and to members of the Research Department, including the Digital Editor Alex Cary, for their support of this project and the inter-departmental vision that has underpinned it.
One of the pleasures of this project has been the enthusiastic collaboration of colleagues in the Tate Online and Information Systems teams. Particular thanks are owed to James Davis, Diane Hall, Steve Hare, Alex Pilcher, John Stack and John Sidney-Woollett, who have worked extraordinarily hard to achieve a fluid integration of the complex materials generated by the research project within the newly redesigned presentation of Tate’s website. They have creatively invented the look and feel of the final project, overcoming complex challenges along the way. Each knows how much he or she has contributed to launching the project and to shaping its final form, and the project editors should like to offer heartfelt thanks to them for their wholehearted support for and engagement with this project.
The development and publication of The Camden Town Group in Context would not have been possible without the support and commitment of The Getty Foundation. As part of its Online Scholarly Cataloguing Initiative (OSCI), the Getty Foundation has fostered a community in which colleagues in partner institutions exchange information about the challenges and possible solutions involved in developing the infrastructures and work cultures necessary to achieve the online publication of museum catalogues. We are particularly grateful to Kristin Kelly, Deborah Marrow, Nancy Micklewright, Hilary Walter and Joan Weinstein, for their steadfast support and guidance, as well as various colleagues in OSCI partner institutions.
The Deborah Loeb Brice Foundation funded the project in its early research phase, from 2002 to 2004, for which we are also grateful.
Artist estate holders and families of artists have been extremely generous, and we would not have been able to create such a well-illustrated scholarly project without their support. We should like to thank warmly Clare Ash, Patrick Baty, Robert Baty, Frank Bayes, Julia Bayes, Monica Beck, Lucy Carter, David Drummond, Jo Drummond, the late Sarah Fox-Pitt, Henrietta Garnett, Connie Gore, the late Frederick Gore, Jennifer Gosse, Henry Lessore, John Lessore, Andrew McIntyre, Fiona McIntyre, Henrietta Phipps, Jane Rutherston, Max Rutherston, Simon Shorvon, the Jacob Epstein, Lucian Freud and Wyndham Lewis estates, as well as DACS. We are also particularly indebted to the publishers, editors and authors who have allowed us to reprint texts from their books, and to Bill Clark of Windyridge Music Hall CDs for providing audio excerpts of music hall songs.

Supported from so many different quarters, this landmark project, we hope, will throw new light on the Camden Town Group and its era, and help shape future thinking about the fast-developing possibilities for online scholarly publishing.
