This subsection comprises ‘colour beginnings’ which can be directly related to the subjects of finished watercolours engraved for Turner’s Picturesque Views in England and Wales, published between 1827 and 1838. Often the compositions, colouring and effects are directly comparable; in other cases the studies here evoke variant or alternative compositions. One additional subject, Lichfield Cathedral, is included here since a finished England and Wales-type watercolour exists, although it was not engraved (see the entries for Tate D25215 and D25221; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 93, 99). The England and Wales series is discussed in more detail in the overall introduction to this section of the catalogue.
