Turner noted inside the front cover of this sketchbook (D41050) that he arrived in Milan at noon on a Wednesday (14 January), and complained of ‘Snow all the way’. Turning the sketchbook horizontally, he used this page for a rough outline of a milk carrier’s cart he observed during his stay in the city. He included comparisons with a second and possibly third cart below, one in ‘Torino’, as per his inscription. For further views of Milan in this sketchbook, see under folio 10 verso (D21683).
