With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner used this page for a rough landscape study, delineating the various layers with colour notes. Spanning the width of the page, the upper line indicates the ‘Dark Cloud’. Beneath are the words ‘Green’ and ‘Bl[ue]’, near what appears to be the silhouetted Alps. Below is a tree-lined ‘Lake’, labelled with Turner’s inscription. This study possibly corresponds with folio 4 verso opposite (D21671), which is similarly detailed with colour annotations.
