With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner executed this extremely rough sketch of moored boats along a river or lake, with buildings indicated in the distance. The artist’s precise geographical location remains unclear, although he was presumably near the River Ticino or River Po, travelling westwards from Milan to Turin. The inscription ‘pla[...]’ is partly illegible. This view likely relates to similar studies of moored boats on folios 1 verso, 2 recto, and the recto of the present leaf (D21665–D21666, D21668).
