Loosely rendered, this rough sketch depicts a village nestled at the foot of the Apennine Mountains. Turner’s location was possibly north of Foligno in Umbria; his inscriptions may read ‘Bell | Fiore’ and ‘Pale’, referring to the two villages of Belfiore and Pale along the Chienti Valley. This is possibly a variant study of the mountain view on the recto (D14855).
