This loosely defined sketch of riverside buildings and boats is difficult to locate; Finberg’s 1909 Inventory of the Bequest proposed the banks of the River Tiber.1 Turner was possibly sketching on his departure from Rome in early January 1829, as he headed north-east towards the Apennine Mountains. The obscure markings in the foreground appear to be shells or rocks.
