With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner produced these two slight studies of church buildings, trees and a bridge in Rome. Finberg’s 1909 Inventory of the Bequest identified the subject as the Church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti to the north of the city, which overlooks the Spanish Steps and the Piazza di Spagna.1 However, the cursory outlines make a precise location difficult to confirm.
