Joseph Mallord William Turner Church Interior, ?Rome 1828-9

Folio 3 Verso:
Church Interior, ?Rome 1828–9
D14837
Turner Bequest CLXXVIII 3a
Pencil on white laid paper, 97 x 72 mm, extended with modern white laid paper to standard sketchbook width of 132 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The outer half of this page has been torn out, presumably by Turner. On the remnant of the page is a cursory sketch of a church interior, possibly with the canopy of a pulpit or an organ towards the centre. The church is difficult to identify from the rough outlines, although it is possibly located in Rome.
Technical notes:
The remnant of the torn-out page is uneven in width, extending at its widest point to 72 mm. It has been made good with modern laid paper, increasing the width to 132 mm to match the sketchbook’s intact leaves.
