With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner executed this study of an unidentified park or garden, presumably in or near Siena. Harder pencil strokes in the foreground delineate the five trees and stone balustrading. Walls and arches are outlined to the right, and a distant town amid rolling hills is visible in the distance. In the bottom-right corner is a group of statues, presumably from the same park or garden.
For further commentary on Turner’s first visit to Siena in 1828, together with a list of relevant works in the sketchbook, see under folio 10 verso (D21607).
