As identified by Turner’s lower inscription, the subject of this loosely rendered sketch is ‘Poggibonsi’, a Tuscan town the artist encountered as he journeyed south towards Siena. For further views, see folios 6 verso, 7 recto and verso, 8 recto and 9 verso (D21599–D21602, D21605). With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner depicted the town in its surrounding landscape. Dominating the vista at the centre is the belltower of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. A minor landscape study appears in the top-left corner, while the bottom-left corner is sectioned off with a rough view of buildings and trees.
