Finberg’s 1909 Inventory of the Bequest identifies this rough study of a town, executed with the sketchbook turned horizontally, as Poggibonsi.1 Turner encountered this Tuscan town as he journeyed south from Florence towards Siena; for variant views, see folios 6 verso, 7 recto and verso, 8 verso and 9 verso (D21599–D21601, D21603, D21605). In the foreground, areas of hatching indicate trees, woodland and the contours of the slopes. The town buildings are swiftly outlined, terminating to the right with a belltower that likely belongs to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Rolling hills are traced on the horizon and a distant hilltop town is visible to the left.
