With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner composed this rough study of a Tuscan landscape with trees, buildings and a path curving into the foreground. As noted by Finberg in his 1909 Inventory of the Bequest, it was likely executed near the town of Poggibonsi, as the artist journeyed south from Florence towards Siena.1 For further views of this subject, see folios 6 verso, 7 recto, 8 recto and verso, and 9 verso (D21599–D21600, D21602–D21603, D21605). The loose lines and illegible inscription in the bottom-left corner suggest Turner was sketching from a moving carriage.
