With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner executed this rapid study of a single-arched bridge between two buildings. The shaky lines indicate that he was sketching from a moving carriage. The surrounding topography is roughly rendered, making it difficult to pinpoint a precise location for this Tuscan landscape, which presumable lies between Florence and Siena.
