The subject of this slight study, executed with the sketchbook turned horizontally, appears to be a small coastal village. It is likely located along the Riviera di Levante, the stretch of Ligurian coastline linking Genoa to La Spezia. The vertical line to the right may represent a single moored vessel in the harbour, and a belltower and buildings are also outlined. Turner’s viewpoint appears to be from a boat out at sea, looking inland to observe the mountainous topography.
