Turner made several sketches of Villefranche-sur-Mer from the road to the north, see folios 11 recto–12 recto (D21153–D21155). This example, with the page turned horizontally, depicts not only the bay and the harbour town, with its recognisable landmarks such as the Citadelle St-Elme and the church of Saint-Michel, but also the surrounding coastline.1 Mont Boron and Mont Alban with its fortress dominate the horizon to the right, while part of Cap Ferrat to the east can be seen on the left.
