The main sketch on this page, used horizontally, represents a view of the Île de Saint-Honorat, the smaller of the two islands of Lérins, situated off the coast of Cannes.1 Turner’s viewpoint is from the sea looking towards the ancient, fortified monastery of Saint-Honorat, with the mountains beyond Cannes visible in the background. An alternative view can be found on folio 4 verso (D21140).
Also on this page are two further sketches executed with the sketchbook the other way up. The studies are too schematic to be conclusively identified, although they represent views of mountainous coastline.
