The upper half of this page contains three figures, one of whom appears to be holding an infant. At their feet are two animals, possibly dogs. A lack of contextualising scenery makes the location difficult to determine. Beneath, executed with the sketchbook inverted, is a rough street view annotated with illegible inscriptions. One word possibly reads ‘aix’, indicating that Turner may have passed via Aix-en-Provence along his route to Marseille. If the reading is accurate, this subject is out of sequence with the overall itinerary embodied by this sketchbook (see the Introduction), which begins near Lyon and ends near Toulon.
