The forms of four figures are suggested in the foreground of this sketch. In front of them is a town rising on a steep incline. The town stands on the other side of a bridge with a single spanning arch and a tall building with a tented roof attached to one side of it, of a type similar to that shown in Tate D20355 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 60). The town is nestled in the middle of a series of dramatic peaks that recede into the distance.
