Joseph Mallord William Turner Tree in a Landscape c.1824

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Tree in a Landscape c.1824
D20343
Turner Bequest CCXXIV 50
Pencil on blue wove paper, 145 x 195 mm
Inscribed in pencil ‘50’ bottom right, descending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCXXIV 50’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Very faint marks in pencil to the left form a series of vertical lines suggestive of trees. To the right of this are two horizontal lines with a row of shorter vertical strokes radiating out from the top one. To the right of the sheet reaching to the edge in the middle is another horizontal line with a number of short vertical strokes running perpendicular to it.
There is a sketch of an unrelated subject on the verso (D20344; CCXXIV 50v).
For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section Introduction.
Technical notes:
The sheet is discoloured reddish-brown along the left and bottom edges suggesting water damage, likely a result of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood. This damage has left an inscription in ink in the top left illegible. There is a tear of approximately 10 mm on the bottom of the sheet, just right of centre.
