In the present sketch the two registers record a view identified by the inscriptions as either being from or of Milnthorpe. A similar shoreline tower appears in a more detailed sketch in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (Tate D11500; Turner Bequest CXLVII 36), and it is possible that the present sketch is taken from the north side of a tower just north of the river Bela, looking south. The present author has dated Turner’s sketches in the Milnthorpe area to Monday 5 August 1816.1 This sketch, made with the page turned horizontally, is upside-down in relation to the main sequence (see the sketchbook’s Introduction).
The author has previously suggested that the two registers of sketches on this page, together with the four registers on folio 2 recto opposite (D11044), might constitute one continuous panorama.2 This is not certain, although it is clear that both pages record views in the Kent Estuary near Milnthorpe.
