This sheet is one of a series of sketches associated with a tour of the Seine with a proposed dating of 1827–9. The studies are characterised by the use of pen and ink on blue paper; for more information see the Introduction to this section.
This group of sketches reflects a keen interest in the architecture of the region, and Turner’s studies of the city of Evreux are no exception. This view of the interior of the cathedral of Notre-Dame captures the cathedral’s soaring arches, recording architectural details in considerable detail. Yellow chalk was added to the, for this group of studies, usual technique of pen and ink on blue paper, in some areas on the right of the sheet. For other views of Evreux’s cathedral thought to date from the same visit see Tate D24903, D24903, D24963 and D24972 (Turner Bequest CCLX 67, 127, 136).
