The drawing continues across folio 5 verso opposite (D14497) opposite. The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘View from Riva degli Schiavone; with Isola di S. Giorgio Maggiore and the Salute in the distance on the left’), crossing out ‘and the Salute in the distance’, adding: ‘Ponte del Vin & small houses to r.’1 Bell similarly annotated Finberg’s 1930 In Venice with Turner (‘View from the Riva degli Schiavoni, with S. Giorgio and Salute on the left’): ‘Ponte del Vin & small houses on the right’.2
This view is from a little further east along the Riva degli Schiavoni than in previous double-page drawings (folios 3 verso–5 recto; D14493–D14496), with the Ponte del Vin right of centre, above which the Hotel Danieli (Palazzo Dandolo) is left blank, having been rendered in selective detail in D14494; above is the campanile of St Mark’s. The low buildings in the foreground are in a different configuration to those seen today.
For other drawings made in the vicinity, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
