This colour sketch, formerly assumed to be a depiction of the coastline near Dieppe,1 has been identified by Turner specialist, Eric Shanes, as a view of the Normandy harbour of St-Vaast-la-Hougue.2 It is associated with material gathered by Turner during his 1826 tour of Northern France and was used as the basis for a finished watercolour of about 1827 on the historicising subject of jousting sailors, The Jute: A Jousting Constest at St-Vaast-la-Hougue, Normandy (private collection).3
