Turner filled much of this page with studies of coastal structures, particularly the lattice work of tall piers at the centre. The seaside sketches in this volume have been located to the regions around Dover, Folkestone, and Calais on each side of the English Channel.1 The drawings on folio 9 verso opposite (D24122; Turner Bequest CCLVI 8a) are of Calais.
