This sheet of paper was once bound in with the rest of the sketchbook and has since been detached, perhaps when the original parchment covers were removed; see D40500. For the evidence identifying the sheet with the sketchbook, see the entry for the verso D40497. The riverside scenery depicted in these drawings was presumably taken the Brittany countryside which is the subject of extensive study in this volume. For the major sites covered by Turner in these pages, see the sketchbook introduction.
Technical Notes:
The torn bottom edge of the sheet has been repaired with white laid paper.
