This scene of trees above dark water, with what may be a pale castle above and hills beyond, has been tentatively suggested by Eric Shanes as an Italian, Scottish or Welsh subject; he has also compared it with Tate D25333 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 211),1 which has a similar red foreground, although the pale brown forms in the distance there appear more irregular and mountainous that architectural.
