This urban riverside subject is unidentified, but may be Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Finberg’s assertion of ‘Roman ruins’1 within the view is a little unclear, unless he meant the arcaded buildings high on the left bank.

Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘431’ bottom left and ‘405’ top right, upside down; inscribed in pencil ‘330’ towards bottom right. There are remnants of white paper from a former mount at the corners.
