As recognised by Finberg subsequent to his 1909 Inventory, the subject is Genoa’s harbour,1 with its distinctive two-stage lighthouse; for other views see under Tate D33718 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 39); see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating.
There is another harbour scene, presumably recorded in the vicinity, on the recto (D33799; CCCXLI 118).
