The subject of this hilly waterside scene is unidentified, with no clear landmarks, but may be Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Finberg’s 1909 Inventory title1 has been retained here almost unchanged, although how he arrived at an Italian identification is unclear; he may have adopted an existing title from a checklist of the ongoing Fifth Loan Collection from the Turner Bequest, which did not have a printed catalogue.

See Finberg 1909, II, p.940.
Technical notes:
Although there are no obvious signs of localised damage, the odd effects of the bright, streaked sky with an area of effectively bare paper at the centre may stem from exposure to water in the course of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood.
Verso:
Blank; inscribed in pencil ‘CCXCII 43’ top left. There are remnants of adhesive and paper at the corners from when the sheet was formerly mounted for display.
