This series of sketches shows aspects of the Suffolk North Sea coast at Walberswick near Southwold. The River Blyth empties at ‘Blyth Haven’ in Walberswick; Turner depicts this small dock in the bay in the central sketches. Dunwich (see Tate D18257–D18258; Turner Bequest CCIX 51a–52) can be seen in the distance. At rear Turner pictures Walberswick and its fifteenth-century Church of Saint Andrew (see Tate D18261; Turner Bequest CCIX 53a). There is also a separate jotting of the ‘W[ind] Mills’ of ‘D Wich [Dunwich]’ at top right. See also Tate D18260; Turner Bequest CCIX 53.
