Here Turner records a sunset at Colchester in Essex. Sketching from the banks of a pond with what appears to be Middle Mill at right, the artist looks back towards the Castle atop a hill (see Tate D18169; Turner Bequest CCIX 6a). The sun, represented by a diminutive circle, is shown in its westerly descent at top left.
