Here Turner depicts Colchester in the county of Essex. Colchester Castle crowns the ridge at left, overlooking the town and its winding streets which unfurl beyond. Middle Mill is pictured on the right, on the banks of a pond. This drawing was developed into a finished watercolour and engraved by R Wallis in 1827 for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales series (Tate impression T04512).1 See also Tate D18164–D18166, D18171, D18186, D18275–D18276, D18286, D18296–D18297; Turner Bequest CCIX 3a–4a, 7a, 16, 61–62, 71, 80a–81.
