This swiftly executed sketch is most likely a distant view of Colchester in the county of Essex (see Tate D18166; Turner Bequest CCIX 4a). The form rendered in profile at centre is probably Colchester Castle. On a tree-topped mound at right Turner has inscribed the letters ‘Rw H’ or ‘Road’. The composition is similar to the sketch on Tate D18163; Turner Bequest CCIX 3.
The view extends onto the folio opposite (Tate D18164; Turner Bequest CCIX 3a).
