This finely rendered pencil sketch shows the Marienburg, a former Augustinian monastery, built atop a peak near the town of Zell. The bleeding and feathering of the grey watercolour wash evokes the sense of a chilly morning mist hanging heavy in the valley.
Turner recorded the monastery extensively during his 1824 tour; see Tate D19773–D19775, D19779, D19780, D20163, D20187; Turner Bequest CCXVI 112a–113a, 114a, 115, CCXIX 2, 26. See also the later 1839 drawings in the First Mossel and Oxford and Trèves to Cochem and Coblenz to Mayence sketchbooks (Tate D28299, D28379, D28380; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 5, CCXC 15, 15a).
