This fairly detailed and carefully rendered drawing pictures the city of Trier at left and its ancient bridge, the Römerbrücke, in the distance. The profile of Trier’s St Gangolf’s Church, the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Liebfrauenkirche are visible, delineated in hairline pencil. Turner sketched directly above Pallien to capture this view; the town’s Church of Saints Simon and Jude can be seen in the foreground at left, its tower topped with an ornamental cupola (see also Tate D19727, D19730, D20145; Turner Bequest CCXVI 89a, 91, CCXVIII 7).
