This ethereal view is another showing the city of Trier from Pallien (see Tate D20146, D20148; Turner Bequest CCXVIII 8, 10), a town on the opposite bank of the Moselle. The river, Römerbrücke, and architecture of the city are cursorily sketched in pencil across the middle register and highlighted with chalk. Turner has left the majority of the foreground unworked, save for a few ‘rubbed out’ streaks where the whiteness of the paper is intentionally re-exposed. The expansive sky is illuminated with the same ‘rubbing out’ technique and softly smudged chalk.
