Two separate drawings occupy this sheet: they are differentiated by the relative tone and density of the pencil used. The darker and softer of the pencils was employed to record a view down the Meuse towards the village of Chokier, south of Liège. A lighter, harder pencil is used to delineate part of the same river valley towards the Abbey at Flône, a view which extends onto the folio opposite (Tate D20086; Turner Bequest CCXVII 2). See also the Rivers Meuse and Moselle sketchbook (Tate D19620, D19642; Turner Bequest CCXVI 35, 46a) and the Spa, Dinant and Namur sketchbook of 1839 (Tate D28148; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 57).
