With the page turned vertically, there are three studies of Portchester Castle from Waterside Lane. At the top is the north-west corner of the keep, in the middle it and the lower range along the outer perimeter are seen from the north, while below the same buildings are seen from the north-east, an aspect now partly obscured by trees. See also the studies on folio 11 verso and the recto (D17934, D17935).
This is one of a continuous series of views around Portsmouth between folios 1 recto and 20 recto (D17913–D17951); many appear to have been made from a boat; for the overall sequence and details of the most prominent buildings and defences, see the Introduction.
