This sketch was made on one of the large loose sheets of French paper that Turner took with him to France and Switzerland in 1802. The stream, bridge and village might be compared to subjects in the Chartreuse from the Grenoble sketchbook, for example Tate D04516, D04521; Turner Bequest LXXIV 23, LXXIV Q, probably depicting Fourvoirie in the Gorges du Guiers Mort.
