This slight sketch was made on one of the large loose sheets of grey-washed English paper that Turner took with him to France and Switzerland in 1802. Turner has chosen an upright format to draw this mountain stream and waterfall, which might be in the Chartreuse, perhaps in the Gorges du Guiers Mort.
