The ‘slight sketches’ Finberg detected here are difficult to make out. Towards the bottom appear to be loose pencil marks which might indicate a landscape, while at the top right is a cluster of forms, the clearest of which may be a mast and sail.
The later drawing is partly obscured by the inscription by Turner’s executors, with the book’s original schedule number endorsed by Henry Scott Trimmer, Charles Turner, John Prescott Knight and Charles Lock Eastlake, starting across the top of the page: ‘No 196. This book contains | 20 leaves. – | H.S. Trimmer’. A second signature, ‘C Turner’, follows Trimmer’s towards the top right, with the initials ‘JPK’ and ‘C.L.E.’ towards the top left.
