With the page turned horizontally, Turner’s view is west from low on the Mount Batten side of Plymouth Sound, looking towards Mount Edgcumbe, with Drake’s Island indicated below it at the centre beyond the many small craft moored on the near side. The drawing on folio 16 recto (D09233) shows the distant coast continuing to the south-west, to the left of the present view.
The subjects as far as folio 127 recto (D09358) are all identified or presumed sites within a few miles in and around Plymouth, suggesting a series of fairly short excursions.
